As the bearings age, it'll get harder to start the fan, causing repeated high-power stop/starts and making the fan die a much faster death than it should. I don't like this, as a slowly spinning fan can continue moving with less power than it'd need to start up and no noise at all. So if the IHV has decided that at low temperatures, and the known thermal output of the GPU at idle, their cooler doesn't need the fans, it won't use them.

Low end cards sometimes can't temperature control the fan at all until the driver's loaded and set it to a "safe" level, which is usually far too noisy, until the driver loads. However, the BIOS itself can only usually set fans to very coarse levels, if it can set them at all. Basic fan curves support three points (a point is made up of a temperature and a fan duty value) and use basic linear interpolation between them, modern cards can have many points, replace the fan duty with sensed fan RPM, and use spline interpolation. The fan ramp is programmed into BIOS as a IHV-replaceable module. I believe the GPU BIOS controls this but many GPU's on both AMD and Nvidia's side turn off the fans completely if there isn't a certain temperature threshold, usually 60C on nvidia cards.

This is where the fans of a computer’s case or CPU along with fan speed control software are helpful in lowering heat to acceptable levels. Shouldn't the fans (in my MSI 4G Gaming it's two fans) be running at some minimum speed? When computer components, such as CPU, GPU, disks etc become hot, their performance degrades quickly and the components can even be damaged. ., GPU and PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Temperatures, Fan speed ( and RPM), GPU, Video Engine and Memory Controller load, Video memory usage, GPU core. Hi folks, I ask because when I fire up GPU-Z it shows the temp of my 970 at 43C but my fan speed at zero percent.

I would think, however, that the drivers themselves would have some safeguard for making sure your video card doesn't fry itself in a heavy gaming session, and not rely on having to run a whole separate program to make the fans run in some default manner.ĮDIT: or the BIOS as Beautiful Ninja points out. I don't know honestly if MSI uses semi-fanless operation. I think GPU-Z would report the actual fan speed percentage, wouldn't it (I have no reason to doubt it would)? As soon as I fire up Afterburner (which reports that the GPU fans are running at 40% minimum), I see the GPU temp drop from the mid 40's to 31C, so I'm thinking that it's Afterburner itself that is making them kick on. You can use MSI's Afterburner program if you want to muck with them. Are you sure the video card doesn't use "semi-fanless" operation? Graphics card (right now) each of 6 memory modules shows 1.35V - as reported by HWInfo64. System memory used 4200MB - as reported by GPU-Z. Fan sprpm - as reported by GPU-Z (not too bad) CPU temperatuire 28C - as reported by GPU-Z. I believe NVIDIA's drivers don't manage the fan curve, otherwise it would be part of the package. Sensors GPU temperatures, 59C, 59.5C, 54C, 55C - as reported by GPU-Z.
